Job Description

The Editorial Assistant, Fiction, works closely with The New Yorker’s Fiction Editor and the rest of the fiction department, and is responsible for insuring the smooth operation of the department, including the tracking and evaluation of a high volume of fiction submissions and unsolicited and agented manuscripts. This is a Guild position.

Responsibilities:

Assist with tracking, reading, and assessing large numbers of fiction submissions, and circulating stories with potential.

Participate in weekly meetings and discussions with the fiction editors to evaluate stories and make editorial decisions.

Shepherd stories through the editorial process, editing, communicating with the writer about copy edits and fact-checking queries, working with the writer to produce an online Q&A about the story, and with the audio team to arrange a recording of the story.

Help recruit, interview, select, and manage a team of part-time fiction readers.

Collaborate with various departments on fiction-related projects, including consulting on the biweekly Books & Fiction newsletter.

Help make travel arrangements and fulfill other administrative needs for nonfiction writers edited by members of the fiction department.

Miscellaneous editorial tasks, which may include writing display copy for the print magazine and verifying the accuracy and clarity of fiction audio recordings.

Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.

Skills and Qualifications:

1+ years of experience in the editorial department of a literary magazine, agency, or publishing house.

Extensive familiarity with contemporary fiction and the ability to make informed and thoughtful assessments of stories under consideration.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills, especially the ability to set and meet reading deadlines and the ability to multitask.

Meticulous editorial skills and sharp attention to detail.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.
