Humphris Nursery, is a wholesale only nursery, located in Mooroolbark, with three additional production sites throughout the Yarra Valley, at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.

Established in the 1870’s, Humphris has been modernised, expanded and cared for by 5 generations of the Humphris family, making it one of the oldest continuously registered wholesale nurseries in Australia.

We supply a wide range of exotics, natives and grasses into quality retail nurseries and have expanded and developed to include, not just high quality plants to the retail trade, but also to landscapers, councils and wholesale growers. Our extensive client list includes Bunnings.

Humphris Nursery is in a significant growth phase and as market conditions remain buoyant, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and experienced Sales and Business Development Manager, to lead an enthusiastic sales team to their next level of performance. 

As part of the Senior Leadership Team, this role will have full leadership responsibility for the Humphris Nursery Sales team as well as some significant key account management responsibilities. This will be one of the business’s most important hires for some time. 

Through effective coaching, training, mentoring and guidance, the Sales and Business Development Manager will empower the sales team to fully realise its and the business’s full potential.

The role

This role will be highly autonomous and will suit a leader who is capable of being hands-on as well as making a significant contribution to the broader strategic plans of the business.

You will be accountable for overseeing the management, as well as growing a portfolio of long-term relationships and existing customers within the retail, wholesale nursery, landscape and commercial sectors and identify potential business opportunities and be involved in developing new customers across the entire industry supply chain.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the Company’s product offerings, competitors in the industry, and the business’ position in the market
  • Strengthen relationships, develop and identify opportunities, successfully turn concepts in to profitable ventures that could enhance overall business performance
  • Driving high levels of performance across the sales team through leadership, performance management and coaching
  • Ensure a process of continuous improvement in customer relationship management and customer service
  • Identifying opportunities for reducing complexity and the cost of doing business

What you need to succeed

  • A proven sales track record and a passion for leadership
  • The ability to maintain a strong and positive internal culture
  • Resilience, flexibility and adaptability with high energy and a positive mindset
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills to manage both internal and external relationships
  • A comprehensive understanding of sales budgeting and forecasting and the ability to develop and execute business sales strategies
  • Solid prior experience in B2B Sales Management within a manufacturing environment/FMCG industry
  • Highly self-motivated and as a natural leader you are assertive and not afraid to make a decision

Skills and competencies:

  • Experience: five or more years’ experience in sales and business development management positions with experience in sales team leadership
  • Self-motivated: a “one-speed” energy with a highly self-driven sense of motivation. Disciplined, and have the ability to work and hit targets with limited supervision. The capacity and desire to work in a fast-paced, challenging environment with peers who challenge you to be better and have the ability to deal with and handle objections and rejection
  • Organizational skills: demonstrate your ability to manage your time and prioritize important tasks, present information confidently and be able to quickly learn about new products and processes
  • Communication skills: excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to handle yourself professionally with customers, and colleagues and have the skills to form relationships with new people. Work well in a team environment with proven leadership skills
