About us

At the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), we safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy. Part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), APHA is strategically important in supporting the Government’s response to national emergencies, including disease outbreaks. We have 2,600 staff located around Great Britain, internationally recognized specialist laboratory facilities at Weybridge in Surrey and smaller laboratories in various locations. We are accredited to ISO17025 for laboratory work, ISO17020 for inspection work, ISO17043 for Proficiency Testing provision, certified to ISO9001 and work to several GxP standards.

About the job

As Head of Quality Services, your role will be to lead our Quality Services activities, managing and mentoring a team of quality managers, auditors, document control managers and support staff. You’ll be required to maintain existing accredited quality systems, implement new quality systems and deliver best practice quality management approaches across the APHA.

You’ll play a senior leadership role in agency, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and providing support and advice to the CEO, Directors, Unit Heads and other internal colleagues. The role involves a high degree of co-ordination across internal business areas, government departments and external stakeholders, and as such you will have to ensure access to appropriate information in relation to quality management, audit and associated policies. You’ll hold strategic responsibility for APHA’s relationship with all external auditors.

About you

A confident leader and line manager with excellent communication skills, you’ll have expert knowledge of ISO1700 and 9000 series quality standards. You’ll also have a wealth of experience implementing and maintaining ISO quality systems, auditing and audit organsiation, and a strong understanding of GxP quality systems.

Decision making will be one of your strengths, and you’ll be able to clearly understand the needs and expectations of our stakeholders, and explain complex issues and information in an accessible way. You’ll also be able to give and receive feedback in a professional manner, and remain open-minded and impartial in discussions.

You’ll be a keen networker who’s happy working closely with colleagues, and you’ll enjoy working proactively to establish contacts, promote diversity and inclusion, and bring the best out of the people you work with.
