SPORT PROGRAMS MANAGER

ABOUT THE ROLE: 

The Sports Program Manager is responsible for the management of sporting programs with a key focus on enhancing the experience of students enrolled at the University of Newcastle, staff and the wider community. Key deliverables for the role include:

Promotion of sport programs and services

  • Coordinate NUsport’s involvement in University Orientation, Open Days and Advisory Days
  • Provide up-to-date content for relevant promotional material including website, EDM, brochures, other hard copy and electronic media
  • Provide reports to the CEO and Board as required with regard to NUsport programs and services.

Sport Programs

  • Planning, preparation and coordination of Sport Programs (including budgets, new sponsorship, surveys and communication). 
  • Oversight of NUsport’s social sport program, Res Challenge and Club Sport including budgetary and reporting accountability as well as the management of the Sports Programs Administrator and Sports Officials. 
  • Ongoing training and development of standard operating procedures to lead staff.
  • Contribution to workforce planning and hiring activities as required. 
  • Development of annual operational sports plan in alignment with the NUsport Strategic Plan
  • Development of Work Integrated Learning opportunities in sport programs where applicable 

University Sport and Inter-varsity events

  • The role will be responsible for the facilitation of UniSport National and regional events as well as inter varsity and stand alone university participation events in addition to Residential College and Social Sport programs
  • Administer entry and eligibility requirements for all Uni Sport events
  • Travel with teams as appropriate as University Team Manager
  • Set budgets annually in collaboration with CEO
  • Coordinate selection of team management personnel
  • Coordinate trials as necessary to ensure high performing teams are selected. 

Elite Athlete Program

  • Manage the application process, including assessing and verifying elite student-athletes
  • Coordinate student-athlete academic support as needed including athlete inductions/orientations and provision of academic-related advice and advocacy
  • Regular communications with Academic Registrar, Colleges and Course Conveners where necessary.
  • Provide up-to-date content for relevant promotional material including website, EDM, brochures, other hard copy and electronic media. 

Scholarship and Sports Awards

  • Manage the selection process for University Sport Scholarships and Sports Awards – including coordination of selection panels, receipt and screening of applications
  • Provision of secretariat duties for the Sport Scholarship and Sports Awards Selection Committees
  • Provide support for the hosting of annual University Sports Awards function
  • Coordinate annual sport scholarship selections and sports awards nominations and selections
  • Liaise with the University’s Office of Alumni and Philanthropy to develop scholarships and increase funding for sport-related projects

ABOUT YOU

The ideal person will have the following:

  • Degree in Sport and Recreation Management/Business or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience at a senior level in the supervision of staff in a demanding environment including assisting others in performing work by providing leadership, motivation, guidance, and direction.
  • Demonstrated event management and coordination experience
  • The capacity to develop, implement and evaluate policy, procedures, and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee career development and progression of staff, coaching individuals to improve current performance whilst developing new capabilities for the future. 
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills including a hands-on approach and ability to perform duties at all levels, combined with demonstrated team experience and working collaboratively on projects.
